FAQ -  FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

NB: Copies of the "Technical Tips" Newsletters sent to you by bulkmail are pasted below the following FAQs

1. How do I register?
Follow the instructions given online in the welcome text. You will be asked to specify which Chapter (Section) you want to join. You have to select one or the other to be able to continue the registration process.

2. How do I update my profile?
Connect you by using the "Sign in" facility in the right grey area of the Home Page and you will see a new menu being dispayed with "Edit My Profile" as one of your choices. Click on this link and insert your updated information in the corresponding fileds. Don't forget to click on the "Save Changes" button at the end of the process.

You must update your data regularly on the web site, and in particular your e-mail adress, in order to receive all news and infos which we dispach by e-mail.

3. How do I join one or several Groups (Field or Headquarters postings, or Special Interest Group)?
Once you have registered, received the confirmation and then signed in, you will be able to join one or several Groups. Go the left vertical menu and select "Groups" The choice you will have is between postings you had when you worked for the ICRC (Field or Headquarters), or a Special Interest Group. You may also wish to add to those choices, either because we forgot to list a specific field or HQ posting or because you would like a new SIG to be created. Simply click on "Join Group" in the menu which you will see in the grey horizontal bar at the top, once selected your group. Remember that you can join as many groups as you wish !

4. Why should I join one or several Groups (Field or Headquarters postings, or Special Interest Group)?
You will be able to network directly and at once with all members of your Chapter, your Field or HQ posting groups or your Specific Interest Groups. Other members organizing special events will also greatly appreciate this quick and easy communication tool.

5. How do I quickly access the information concerning my Chapter or any of the groups which I have joined?
Sign in and see on the right side of the screen the grey field 'My Profile'. See section 'My Groups' and below the individual groups to which you belong (Chapter, Field postings or Special Interest Groups). Click on each of the groups mentioned and you will reach their respective homepages. See on top of each homepage the horizontal grey menu bar (Group Home, Group Directory, Photo Album, Blog, etc.) and make use of it.

6. How do I send a bulk email to all members of my groups, or the Chapter I have joined?
Sign in and see on the right side of the screen the grey field 'My Profile'. Click on section 'Email My Groups'. You will reach a page with the heading 'Email Group Members - Step 1: Compose'. Select in the 'To' field your Chapter or Group you have joined; indicate the 'Subject' in the relevant field; compose your message in the field 'Email Body'; click on the 'Preview Email' button. You can then either click on the 'Send Email' button or click, if need be, on the 'Edit' button, before previewing your message again and finally sending it.

Most important: You need to update regularly your details directly on the website, namely your email address, in order to receive any information sent by email to your Chapter or the various Groups you belong to.

7. Are you identified as a lost member?
This means you ARE in our database but your data has not been updated for quite a while. We would welcome your registration as a new member so that you may update your data, your profile, add a picture and join the network of your Chapter/Groups friends.

8. If I know about a lost member, what should I do?
Send an email to the Webmaster who will follow-up: contact us, or simply click on the small envelop icon which you will see besides his/her name in the "Lost Members" list and fill the form. Don't forget to tell us whom you are writing us about !

9. I’d like to contribute to a Chapter or a Group page, what should I do?
Please contact us. We look forward to your support and we can help you with the first steps to post texts and photos.

10. I’d like to recommend the Association to some friends, who should be contacted?
Get them to contact us .

11. I don't have access to the member's sections of the site any longer. What should I do ?
Check first if you have entered your username and personal password properly. If this is not the cause of the problem, did you pay your dues ? NB: Without paying / renewing payment of your dues, time will inevitably come when your access will be restricted...

If it really not one of those two previous reasons, contact the Webmaster.

12. What are "my connections" ?
When you are in your personal profile, you have a menu item entitled "My connections". This is basically an opportunity for you and each member to create a special link with other selected members. Those chosen by you and invited to be part of your "inner circle" will, if they accept your invitation, be abble to communicate directly with this group of selected friends.  Another member may invite you as well to belong to his own group.

13. What is an "RSS feeder" ?
If you go to the calendar of "Events", you will see in the upper right corner of the page, a small orange icon marked RSS. This is a option which enables you to be updated in real time on your own Internet browser with the latest calendar events planned by the AFD. The same option exists with our "Latest News". Simply click on this icon, and follow the procedure. Our info will reach you at all times on a small menu item placed on your browser, whether you are at that time visiting our web site or not.

14. Any cookies or strange bugs?
Try to "Clear Cache" in your browser. Delete your cookies. Try another browser. Ask your computer shop or ... contact us.

"TECHNICAL TIPS" NEWSLETTER No 1

Dear xxx

Since the opening of our new website on April 1st 2007, many of our members have visited regularly and made progressive use of the many features offered by sophisticated new technology.

At the same time, several have also experienced some difficulties as they were not so "computer savvy". Some members found the procedure to "Sign In" too complicated, sometimes forgot their User ID or Password or mixed-up the "sign In" with the "Register" procedure, etc...

In order to help them and facilitate the navigation of our site, we are starting today a series of regular "Technical Tips" Newsletter which will hopefully make the whole thing more "user friendly" to a majority.

Please give us your feed-back. Let us know if this helps you and what other features you would like us to explain in future Newsletters. And obviously if you experience problems, don't hesitate to contact us directly. We will endeavour to help you in the best possible way.

Friendly greetings,

Francis Amar
Webmaster

1. HOW DO I "SIGN IN" ?
Normal 0 21 false false false MicrosoftInternetExplorer4
  • On the Home Page: Enter your Username and Password in the SIGN IN fields in the right part of your screen. If you tick the “remember me” box, your computer will remember your log-on coordinates and you will not need to do it again unless you clean the “cache” of your computer.
  • On any other "Members Only" restricted pages: You will automatically be asked your Username and Password if you want to access the information. Here again if you have ticked the "remember me" box, your computer will not ask you to "Sign In" each time.

2. WHAT IS "REGISTER" ?
  • The "Register" procedure is meant for newcomers to apply for membership. They will be asked to submit their application and personal data for us to review. After approval (if they qualify) they will be registered as regular members of our Association.

  • This feature should not be used by regular registered members.

3. HOW DO I PAY MY DUES ?

Look at the main menu on the left side of your screen. Click on the item "Dues" and then on the item "Pay your membership dues" which will subsequently appear to the right. This will take you to the page where we offer you three different ways to settle your dues:

  • Credit card payment. It is easy, fast and perfectly secured by our Swiss Credit Card Processing partner "Telekurz / Saferpay". We strongly encourage you to use this feature which simplifies and accelerate our administrative handling of your money.

  • Direct bank transfer by telebanking if you have subscribed to this service with your bank. This is also fast and efficient and simplify both your work and ours.

  • Traditional BV payment at the post office upon receipt of a bill which our Treasurer can send you upon request. If this is your favored way of paying your bills, why not. But remember that it will take several days before we can process your payment and therefore update your account.

4. HOW DO I UPDATE "MY PROFILE" ?
Normal 0 21 false false false MicrosoftInternetExplorer4
  • First "Sign In", then look at the menu -My Profile- which appears in the right part of your screen and then look at -My personal Page-. This is how other members will see the information you have given hem access to.

  • Go to -Edit my profile-. This is where you can change your personal data, including your Username and Password! Kindly remember to visit this page regularly and keep this data up-to-date, in particular your e-mail address and phone numbers, so that we can keep in touch with you at all times. Remember to tick the -I accept the Terms of Use- box at the bottom of the page otherwise your changes will not be saved!

Other features at your disposal in "My Profile". will be covered in future "Technical Tips" Newsletters.

"TECHNICAL TIPS" NEWSLETTER No 2

Dear xxx

Very few of our members have reacted so far to our first "Technical Tips" Newsletter... Should we conclude from this deafening silence that everyone is totally comfortable with the many technical features of our website, or rather... just too lazy to ackowledge receipt ?

In any case we believe that for some of you this might still be somewhat useful, and therefore here comes No 2.

This time we will concentrate on some of the many features contained in "My Profile" and which we encourage you to take advantage of.

If you think that you have missed No1 or if our message went straight into your "Spam" folder by accident, you can still read it. It can be found in the F.A.Q section of our website at the bottom of the page (look the item in the main menu on the left of the screen). The present Newsletter and all future ones will be posted there as well.

Please give us your feed-back this time ! Let us now if this helps you and what other features you would like us to explain in future Newsletters. And obviously if you experience problems, don't hesitate to contact us directly. We will endeavour to help you in the best possible way.

Meanwhile, we wish you a very Happy and Peaceful passage into next year !

Francis Amar

1. "MY GROUPS"

  • In the "My Profile" section which will appear on the right of your screen as soon as you "Sign In" with your User ID and Password, you will find a whole list of options:
  • If you have not yet done so, think about joining one of the many existing "groups" and interact with fellow-members. Maybe those who have worked in the same delegations where you have been posted, or others who share the same interest you do (Activités extèrieures, Philoabende, Corporate Social Responsibility etc...).
  • Joigning a group (or several of course !) enables you to exchange privileged information with some ex-colleagues you have shared some time of your life with in the past. You may share information, memories and photos as each group offers possibilities to create photo albums or blogs.
  • One feature which is slowly growing is precisely the sharing of old photos which most of us have brought back from their field assignments. Looking at old friend's faces and rediscovering some of our faithful national staff is quite fun !

2. "MY NETWORKS"
  • This option will let you register one or several social networks to which you may belong, such as “LinkeIn”, “Facebook” and others.

3. "MY EVENTS REGISTRATIONS"
  • This will show which upcoming events advertised in the Calendar you may have registered to. This works only for events where online registration is possible of course such as “Philoabende”.

4. “MY BLOGS”

  • Create your personal Blog and share your thoughts and experiences with other Members.

ANNUAL DUES
THANK YOU !

Thanks to all those (the vast majority of you !) who have settled their 2008 dues before the end of the year and the growing number of members who have already started paying 2009.

Unfortunately, as happens each year, a few members have resigned for various personal reasons or are simply not intersted anylonger. They will be taken out of our members database.

Our Treasurer Eveline Bürki is presently in the process of passing-over her responsibilities to her successor Kurt Buenzli after many years of relentless service to provide us with rigorous financial administration. as well as friendly and generous support in many other ways.

Please the join the central and sections committees in thanking her warmly and welcoming Kurt !

This fourth "Technical Tips" Newsletter will explain the last five options of "My Profile" which we have not covered yet. With this, each of you should now be in a position to update easily your personal profile to keep it up-to-date, and use the various facilities at your disposal if you want to. Just remember that you have access to this section once you have "Signed In" with your personal ID and Password.

The next "Tip" we want to explain this time is the use of "blogs". This is particularly important now that our President has sent all of us the draft future Statutes of the Association to be (hopefully) approved at our next General Assembly on June 13. Your comments, possible amendments and suggestions are invited and a special "blog" has be opened to this effect. So, take a minute to understand how it works and...join the debate !

If you have missed the previous 3 "Technical Tips" newsletters, remember that you can still find them in the F.A.Q section of our website at the bottom of the home page (look the item in the main menu on the left of the screen). This fourth one will also be posted there of course !

Don't hesitate to let us know what other specific features you would like us to explain in future Newsletters. And obviously if you experience problems, don't hesitate to contact us directly. We will try to help you in the best possible way.
