In Memoriam
This page is created to inform our members of the death of other members of our Association when we learn of them. Please kindly let us know if you hear such sad news, and feel free to send us your contribution if you should want to pay a particular tribute to someone concerned.
It is with great sadness that we have learned of the passing away on 12th July 2010 of
Valérie Gaillard Bonvin
after a courageous battle against cancer. She was 43 years old.
Valérie who was a nurse, joined the ICRC in 1994 and as many at that time, did her first three missions as health delegate in the Great Lakes Region, Africa. In October 1996, as a change from Africa, she accepted a short mission in Grozny, Chechnya before going to Banja Luka in March 1997 and then Sarajevo in May 1998. Her last mission as health delegate for the ICRC, was in Bagdad, Iraq. She left the ICRC in 2001 to pursue her interests in nursing and training in Switzerland.
During her years with the ICRC, Valérie was was known for her motivation, her high professional standards, her cheerfulness and enthusiasm. She was a team player and was part of the group of highly competent field health delegates who could be totally relied upon to go anywhere, and be efficient and effective in helping the victims have access to good health care.
Valérie was married to Guy Bonvin, a former ICRC wathab engineer, and we send to him and to Valérie's family and friends, our deepest sympathy and heartfelt condolences. Our thoughts are with them and we wish them courage at this difficult time.
And to Valérie - you went away with serenity and in peace, surrounded by your husband and family and friends.

passed away in Sarnen (OW) on friday 28 November 2008.
A memorial service was held in Sarnen church on Saturday 6 December.

C'est avec une profonde tristesse que nous avons appris le décès de notre collègue retraité
Monsieur André DURAND
survenu le vendredi 7 mars 2008 dans sa 96ème année.
Entré au service du CICR le 11 mai 1942 au sein de l'agence centrale des prisonniers de guerre, délégué chevronné du CICR, André Durand à poussé la fidélité aux principes du Mouvement jusqu'à ses extrêmes limites, risquant sa propre vie pour aider les autres. Ayant rejoint les rangs du CICR au plus fort de la seconde guerre mondiale, il a été ultérieurement détaché au Moyen-Orient où il fut sérieusement blessé en 1948 lors d'une dangereuse opération qui visait à secourir des bléssés juifs et palestiniens. Pas découragé le moins du monde par cette expérience, il a repris ses activités de secours aux blessés dès que son état de santé l'a permis. André Durand à pris sa retraite en 1977 comme Délégué-Général du CICR pour l'Asie, après 35 ans de services.
André Durand a reçu de nombreuses distinctions tout au long de sa carrière, notamment en 2003 la Médaille Henry Dunant qui récompense un dévouement et des services exceptionnels, l'une des plus hautes distinctions du Mouvement.
Il est l'auteur de nombreux articles sur l'histoire du Mouvement et du CICR, notamment Histoire du Comité International de la Croix-Rouge. De Sarajevo à Hiroshima , Institut Henry Dunant 1978 et Le Comité International de la Croix-Rouge, Fondation Jean Monnet pour l'Europe, Centre de recherches européennes, Lausanne 1980.
Le CICR adresse ses sincères condoléances et ses sentiments de sympathie à sa famille ainsi qu'à ses amis et connaissances.
Les obsèques seront célébrées le jeudi 13 mars à 11h, en la Chapelle des Macchabées, à la Cathédrale Saint-Pierre. L'inhumation suivra au Cimetière du Père Lachaise à Paris, vendredi 14 mars à 14h30.

Denis was a Founder of the "Collège Lémania" in Ivory Coast and an ex Director General of African Timber in DRC
Jeanie Waddell - Fournier
On September 1st, 2006, Jeanie Waddell-Fournier, a Swiss American
public health specialist and delegate of the International Committee of
the Red Cross (ICRC), was tragically killed by a landmine in Casamance,
Senegal, where she was on mission.
A group of family and friends have assembled to organize a project in the
area of Mine Risk Education (MRE) in honour of Jeanie, and to
continue, in a modest way, the humanitarian work which was so
important to her.
Our hope is to help those at risk, namely the children of South Lebanon,
a country that Jeanie loved and where she spent five wonderful years.

Prof. Dr. med. Hans SCHWARZ
(1927 bis 2006)
Nach einem reich erfüllten Leben ist Prof. Dr. Hans Schwarz am 9. Januar 2006 in seinem 79. Altersjahr verstorben.
Hannes Schwarz hat sich nach seiner Pensionierung 10 Jahre lang dem IKRK zur Verfügung gestellt.
Sein letzter Einsatz datiert von 2001.
Seit 2003 war er Mitglied der Zürcher Sektion.
